9 Ways Coaching With LSA Supports Adults

Discover our approach in addressing common struggles adults seek our support with.

Managing Burnout & Overwhelm

Common Struggle

Many adults come to us feeling trapped in a cycle of exhaustion, constantly juggling work, relationships, and personal responsibilities. Despite their best efforts, it can feel like there’s never enough time or energy to meet life’s demands. The constant push to stay on top often leads to burnout, leaving them feeling both physically and emotionally drained.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches work with adults to break this cycle by offering strategies for setting boundaries, prioritizing tasks, and creating routines that promote sustainable energy management. With personalized guidance, adults can approach their responsibilities with more balance and regain control over their time and energy.

Embracing Neurodivergent Strengths

Common Struggle

For many adults, receiving a late diagnosis of ADHD or autism can bring relief and clarity, but also uncertainty about how to move forward. While the diagnosis often explains years of struggles, it can also bring up feelings of regret for lost time and opportunities.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches acknowledge how hard this can be and help adults embrace their neurodivergence and leverage it as a strength. By working to understand how their brain functions, our coaches support them in creating strategies that align with their unique needs.

Rebuilding Confidence at Work

Common Struggle

Many neurodivergent adults find that executive function challenges impact not only their work performance but also their ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors. They may struggle to initiate tasks, manage time, or follow through on projects, leading to feelings of frustration and anxiety about job security. Navigating workplace accommodations or advocating for their needs can feel overwhelming, leaving them unsure of how to address these challenges.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches work with adults to rebuild confidence at work by creating practical strategies for improving time management, task initiation, and follow-through. We also guide individuals in developing communication skills to advocate for workplace accommodations as needed, collaborate more effectively with colleagues, and navigate difficult conversations with supervisors. By addressing both the logistical and interpersonal aspects of work, our coaches empower adults to perform confidently and communicate their needs clearly in professional environments.

Strengthening Personal Relationships

Common Struggle

Many neurodivergent adults we work with find that their executive function challenges spill over into personal relationships, causing feelings of disconnection and emotional distance. They may struggle to express empathy or understand the emotional needs of their partners, family members, or friends, leading to strained relationships and a sense of guilt or inadequacy. While they desire stronger connections, they often feel unsure of how to bridge the gap.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches help adults develop practical tools for emotional regulation, communication, and self-awareness, which can improve their ability to connect with loved ones. While coaching is not therapy, it can be innately therapeutic by providing individuals with the skills needed to strengthen their relationships and express their emotions in a healthier way. We help adults understand their own emotional needs and those of others, facilitating more meaningful connections and reducing feelings of emotional isolation.

Navigating Career Transitions

Common Struggle

Many adults feel stuck in careers that no longer align with their values or neurodivergent needs. The thought of making a career change can feel overwhelming, especially when combined with self-doubt or fear of making the wrong decision. This indecision often leads to stagnation, leaving adults feeling trapped in unfulfilling roles.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches provide support during career transitions by helping adults identify their strengths and values, build confidence in their decision-making, and map out actionable steps toward new career paths. With personalized guidance, adults can explore new career possibilities with confidence rather than fear.

Breaking the Cycle of Self-Criticism

Common Struggle

Many neurodivergent adults, especially those diagnosed later in life, struggle with harsh self-judgment and internalized ableism. They often criticize themselves for not functioning “normally” or for falling behind in life. This negative self-talk exacerbates feelings of failure and inadequacy, creating an ongoing cycle of self-blame.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches help adults recognize and break the patterns of negative self-talk by focusing on their strengths, identifying their unique abilities, and providing tools to reframe challenges. We help clients develop self-compassion and create realistic, manageable goals to replace the unrealistic standards they often hold themselves to. While coaching is not therapy, our compassionate, non-judgmental approach encourages emotional growth and the development of a healthier, more positive relationship with oneself.

Managing Procrastination & Perfectionism

Common Struggle

Procrastination can be a significant challenge for many neurodivergent adults we work with, often driven by a fear of failure or perfectionism. The pressure to meet impossibly high standards can cause delays in starting or completing tasks, leading to increased stress and self-doubt.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches provide tools for breaking the cycle of procrastination and perfectionism. By setting realistic goals, breaking tasks into manageable steps, and shifting focus to progress over perfection, adults can reduce the anxiety that leads to avoidance and take consistent action.

Balancing Competing Priorities

Common Struggle

Adults often struggle to balance competing priorities, whether at work, in relationships, or in personal care. With so many responsibilities pulling them in different directions, it can feel impossible to find time for everything. This imbalance leads to stress, perceived missed opportunities, and feeling perpetually behind.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches help adults find balance by teaching effective time management, boundary-setting, and decision-making skills. With a focus on aligning priorities with values, adults can better manage their time and reduce the overwhelm that comes from trying to juggle too much.

Rebuilding Self-Trust

Common Struggle

Many adults with executive function challenges have lost trust in their ability to follow through on tasks or make reliable decisions. This lack of self-trust spills over into other areas of life, causing them to second-guess their choices and doubt their abilities.

How Coaching Can Help

Our coaches help adults rebuild self-trust by developing consistent, reliable habits and systems for task completion. By providing guidance and gentle accountability, adults regain confidence in their ability to meet commitments, leading to stronger decision-making and greater overall control.

While not all of our clients have ADHD or are autistic, we support many who are. We specialize in addressing executive function challenges that are common for neurodivergent individuals.

Why A Client-Centric Approach?

Why A Client-Centric Approach?

The short answer – because it works.

A person-centered approach recognizes the importance of understanding and connecting with each individual on a deeper level.

Research studies (Thomas, 2006) have identified "The Big Four" common factors that contribute to successful change:

  • Relationship Factors (30%): Establishing a strong connection between the client and the coach.
  • Hope & Expectations (15%): Fostering a sense of optimism and confidence in the process.
  • Models & Techniques (15%): Utilizing evidence-based strategies tailored to the individual's needs.
  • Extra-therapeutic Factors (40%): Considering the unique circumstances and resources in a person's life.

By focusing on these key elements, our person-centered approach ensures that our coaching is effective and genuinely resonates with the people we serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is executive function coaching, and why is it important for adults?

Executive function coaching helps adults develop the essential skills needed to manage life’s daily demands—skills like organizing tasks, managing time, setting priorities, and making decisions. These abilities are crucial for avoiding the overwhelming "ripple effect" that can happen when small disruptions—like missing a deadline or struggling with focus—lead to bigger challenges, such as job insecurity, strained relationships, or feelings of burnout.

Many neurodivergent adults face executive function challenges that can affect every aspect of their lives, from work performance to managing personal responsibilities like finances and self-care. Without the right support, these issues often lead to heightened stress and self-doubt.

At Life Skills Advocate, our coaches work alongside adults to create practical strategies that strengthen these foundational skills. By addressing executive function challenges head-on, we help adults regain control over their lives, minimize the impact of setbacks, and build resilience for a balanced, fulfilling future.

Why choose Life Skills Advocate?

  • Client-Centric Relationships: We prioritize building strong, judgment-free relationships with our clients, understanding their unique needs and goals.
  • Holistic: We take a holistic approach, considering the well-being of the entire family, when applicable. We work closely with families to support the student’s development within their broader environment.
  • We Go Beyond Executive Functioning: We specialize in supporting executive functioning skills while also addressing the social/emotional aspects of neurodivergence. Our coaching approach supports students in navigating both practical and social/emotional challenges, helping them manage school and life more effectively.
  • Inclusive and Safe Environment: We provide a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ clients, understanding and respecting the unique intersection of neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ issues. Our approach is tailored to support the whole person, recognizing the diverse challenges and experiences our clients may face.
  • Gentle Accountability Support: We offer gentle, on-demand accountability support at no extra cost, keeping students motivated and on track.

How does the coaching process work?

The first step in our coaching process is scheduling a complimentary 30-minute discovery meeting to discuss your specific needs and goals. If coaching is a good fit, we then arrange a meet-and-greet to match you with the right coach.

Our coaching program is flexible, but we recommend a minimum commitment of 12 weekly sessions to see meaningful progress. The exact length of coaching varies depending on individual goals and circumstances.

During initial sessions, our coaches may use assessments to better understand your needs, such as executive functioning assessments and other scales. These tools help us tailor the coaching process specifically to you.

Once paired with a coach, you’ll participate in personalized sessions designed to reflect on progress, tackle challenges, and practice strategies. Depending on your situation, we may also offer gentle accountability check-ins between sessions to keep you on track with your goals.

How does coaching differ from therapy?

Coaching and therapy serve different but complementary roles. While coaching is not therapy, it can feel innately therapeutic for many.

In general, coaching focuses on actionable, forward-looking strategies designed to improve daily functioning, work performance, and personal well-being. Our coaches help clients enhance executive function skills such as task management, decision-making, and time management.

Therapy, on the other hand, often explores deeper emotional healing, past trauma, and psychological insights. While we work in collaboration with therapists when needed, our coaching does not replace professional mental health care. It’s important to note that our coaches are not mental health counselors or medical professionals.

Venn diagram showing the differences and similarities between executive function coaching and therapy. Coaching focuses on goal setting, future-oriented strategies, and assumes the client has basic skills. Therapy emphasizes emotional healing and addresses mental health issues. Both approaches share client-centered care, goal setting, and a supportive environment.

What are the backgrounds and qualifications of your coaches?

At Life Skills Advocate, our coaches bring both professional expertise and personal lived experiences with neurodivergence. This unique combination allows them to deeply connect with and understand the challenges adults face.

Professionally, our coaches come from diverse fields, including special education, mental health counseling, social work and others. Each coach undergoes comprehensive internal training and participates in regular professional development to ensure they have the tools needed to support clients effectively.

How long does it take to see results from executive function coaching?

The timeline for results can vary based on individual goals, the complexity of executive function challenges, and level of need. At Life Skills Advocate, we typically recommend a commitment of at least 12 weekly sessions to begin seeing meaningful change.

It’s important to recognize that independence and growth are processes. The goals you set may evolve, and our coaching is designed to support you as you make steady, sustainable progress. Independence isn't an "all or nothing" goal—it’s about developing the skills needed to thrive on your own terms and move towards greater balance.
