"We no longer need to hover over his shoulder to ensure he stays on track."
Lisa - parent
Our son was constantly overwhelmed by school, and we felt like we had to constantly monitor him. After coaching, he’s much better at organizing his time and getting things done on his own. We no longer need to hover over his shoulder to ensure he stays on track.
9 Ways Coaching With LSA Supports High School Students & Families
Discover our approach in addressing common struggles high school students and families seek our support with.
Organize Schoolwork & Plan Ahead
Students often find it hard to keep their schoolwork organized and plan for future tasks. This can lead to a chaotic study environment with missed assignments and increased stress, impacting their academic performance.
Our coaches help students explore and develop personalized systems for managing their materials and planning future tasks.
Find Motivation & Engagement
It’s common for students to feel unmotivated and overwhelmed by their workload, leading to procrastination and disengagement from school activities.
Our coaches help students discover their "why" and set meaningful goals. This process often helps them find strategies that increase motivation and engagement, leading to greater success and a more positive school experience.
Manage Time Effectively
Many students struggle with managing their time, leading to missed deadlines, rushed work, and a lack of balance between school and personal life. This often results in last-minute stress and incomplete assignments.
We help students explore various time management strategies that suit their unique needs. Whether they need more structure or flexibility, our coaching often provides them with tools to meet deadlines and maintain a balanced daily routine.
Build Resilience & Manage Emotions
Navigating the school environment can be stressful for students, leading to heightened anxiety and difficulty managing emotions. Balancing academic and social expectations can result in feeling overwhelmed.
In collaboration with a student's mental health professional (when appropriate), we provide tools and techniques to manage stress and build emotional resilience. By helping them create strategies for emotional regulation and setting boundaries, we support students in developing a balanced approach to their school challenges.
Improve Attention & Focus
Staying focused on tasks and avoiding distractions can be particularly challenging for students. This leads to incomplete tasks and falling behind in schoolwork.
Our coaching helps students create healthy boundaries around distractions and develop personalized strategies to improve focus. By setting clear limits and exploring effective focus techniques, students can often complete tasks more efficiently and stay on track.
Make Thoughtful Decisions
Impulsivity can lead students to make hasty decisions without considering the consequences, impacting both their academic and social lives. Challenges with rejection sensitivity can also cause students to make decisions based on others' expectations instead of their own values.
Our coaches help students identify their personal values and navigate conversations with others. By learning thoughtful decision-making processes and understanding their own priorities, students often make more intentional choices that lead to positive outcomes.
Develop Self-Advocacy Skills
Students often struggle to express their needs and advocate for themselves in academic and social settings, leading to unmet needs and frustrations.
Our coaching empowers students to become better self-advocates by teaching them how to communicate their needs effectively and assertively. By understanding and practicing self-advocacy, students can often ensure their needs are met and build stronger, more supportive relationships.
Build Self-Esteem & Self-Confidence
Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence make it difficult for students to try new things, take on new challenges, and progress academically and socially.
We focus on building self-confidence through achievable goals. As students see their own progress, their self-esteem often grows, empowering them to feel more comfortable tackling new challenges.
Adapt to Changing Environments
Adjusting to new school environments or managing transitions between different households can be tough for students, affecting their academic consistency and emotional stability.
Our coaches recognize that adapting to changing environments is challenging and teach students how to ask for their needs to be met. Additionally, we encourage clients and families to adjust their expectations during difficult times, providing guidance on how to achieve this in a supportive way.
While not all of our clients have ADHD or are autistic, we support many who are. We specialize in addressing executive function challenges that are common for neurodivergent individuals.

Why A Client-Centric Approach?
Why A Client-Centric Approach?
The short answer – because it works.
A person-centered approach recognizes the importance of understanding and connecting with each individual on a deeper level.
Research studies (Thomas, 2006) have identified "The Big Four" common factors that contribute to successful change:
- Relationship Factors (30%): Establishing a strong connection between the client and the coach.
- Hope & Expectations (15%): Fostering a sense of optimism and confidence in the process.
- Models & Techniques (15%): Utilizing evidence-based strategies tailored to the individual's needs.
- Extra-therapeutic Factors (40%): Considering the unique circumstances and resources in a person's life.
By focusing on these key elements, our person-centered approach ensures that our coaching is effective and genuinely resonates with the people we serve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Executive Function Coaching helps high school students enhance critical mental processes such as organization, time management, task initiation, attentional control, self-monitoring, and more across real-life contexts, including school, extracurricular activities, and daily life. These skills are essential for navigating the increasing demands of high school life, where balancing academics, social activities, and personal responsibilities can be overwhelming.
With coaching and compassionate gentle accountability working together, students often achieve better performance in these areas and develop a healthier relationship with themselves and others. This holistic approach helps them gain confidence and manage their tasks more effectively, leading to improved academic outcomes and a more positive school experience.
At Life Skills Advocate, we prioritize our students' emotional regulation as it pertains to executive functioning and understand the emotional ripple effect it can have on their overall quality of life. Our coaches, who bring their own lived experiences with neurodivergence, are trained to recognize the emotional impacts of executive dysfunction and use informed and evidence-based approaches to help students overcome their struggles and build resilience.
At Life Skills Advocate, we're more than just a coaching service. We’re a team dedicated to empowering neurodivergent college students through a personalized, student-focused approach. Here’s what sets us apart:

Our coaching approach supports students in navigating both practical and social/emotional challenges, helping them manage school and life more effectively.
- Inclusive and Safe Environment: We provide a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ clients, understanding and respecting the unique intersection of neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ issues. Our approach is tailored to support the whole person, recognizing the diverse challenges and experiences our clients may face.

At Life Skills Advocate, our coaches bring a wealth of diverse experiences to their roles. Each coach has personal lived experience with neurodivergence, which allows them to connect deeply with the students and families they work with
Professionally, our coaches come from a range of coaching or coaching-adjacent fields, including special education, mental health counseling & social work, among others.
We also provide comprehensive internal training and regular professional development to ensure that our coaches are equipped with the latest tools and strategies to support your high schooler effectively.
The first step in our coaching process is to schedule a complimentary 30-minute discovery meeting to discuss your high schooler's specific needs and goals. If coaching seems like a good fit, we then arrange a complimentary meet-and-greet to match your student with the right coach.
While our coaching program is not bound by a fixed duration, we recommend a minimum commitment of 12 weekly sessions to see meaningful change. However, the exact length of coaching varies based on your student's goals and situation.
In the early sessions, we may use various assessment tools to better understand your student's needs, including executive functioning assessments, readiness to change assessments, motivation scales, "getting to know you" questionnaires, and parenting questionnaires. These assessments help us tailor the coaching experience to their unique needs.
Once paired with a coach, your student will participate in sessions customized to their needs. The process starts with setting clear goals and creating a coaching roadmap. Each session is designed to reflect on progress, address challenges, and practice strategies with the coach's guidance.
Since our approach is holistic, we strongly encourage regular parental involvement. We schedule semi-regular meetings between parents and the coach to ensure alignment throughout the process, adjust strategies based on parent input, and prepare parents to support their child's progress once coaching concludes.
Additionally, if needed, we provide gentle accountability check-ins throughout the week to help students stay on track and make progress in their desired areas.
Resistance to coaching is not uncommon, especially among high school students who might be unfamiliar with what coaching entails or feel anxious about working with another adult. At Life Skills Advocate, we approach this with empathy and understanding, recognizing that students may need time to warm up to the idea.
If we sense reluctance, we may begin with a readiness to change assessment early in the process, which helps both the student and coach understand their current mindset. This assessment is loosely based on the Transtheoretical Model of Change and allows us to gauge whether the student is open to making changes or if they need more support in getting there.
Often, reluctance stems from misconceptions about coaching—students may fear it will be just another adult telling them what to do in a rigid way. To counter this, we make it clear from the start that our coaching is collaborative and student-centered. We genuinely care about what motivates your child and always encourage them to set their own goals in collaboration with their parents. This approach gives students a sense of control over their coaching experience, helping them feel empowered and understood. In some cases, we may frontload sessions with activities focused on building rapport, further easing any initial apprehensions.
Additionally, we work closely with parents to ensure everyone is aligned in their approach, which can also help ease the student's concerns. By emphasizing the supportive and non-hierarchical nature of our coaching, we aim to make the experience as positive and productive as possible for your child.
